The head of Children and Family Protection Unit at Kisoro Police Station Gideon Mfitumukiza has confirmed that the number of men paying child support is on the rise across the district.
Child support is an ongoing, periodic payment made by a parent for the financial benefit of a child following the end of a marriage or other similar relationship.
According to Mfitumukiza, more than 100 men regularly report to the Police Station to hand over their monthly contribution used to support their children with medical care, clothes and School fees.
Mfitumukiza says most men are cooperative and do not require to be followed up. Some of them are boda boda riders, businessman and civil servants.
Children produced outside the official marriage are often frowned up due to cultural and religious sentiments.
As Uganda prepares to celebrate World Women’s Day on March 8th, the Kisoro Probations Office has revealed that most cases of gender-based violence against women are caused by low self-esteem among women.
Alex Okwaratuhe says he receives at least 10 cases of gender-based violence against women every day.
According to Okwaratuhe, many women are still illiterate and believe being beaten and trampled upon is the legitimate right of a husband.
He pointed out that many women have now opted to spend most of their time praying in mushrooming churches which further angers husbands.
Okwaratuhe advised husbands and wives to find a way of cooperating and supporting one another for the sake of peace and development.
