School Directors from Kisoro district have arranged a meeting with Education stakeholders to discuss what has been described as ‘the future of Kisoro’s education system’.

This is according to the Chairperson Kisoro Private Primary Schools Association, Mr Augustine Mbonigaba.

The meeting is scheduled for this Thursday May 2, at the Kisoro District Council Hall.

In an interview with www.vomuhabura.com, Mr Mbonigaba, who is also the Vice Mayor Kisoro Municipality, said the meeting is aimed at harmonising how the academic performance of Kisoro schools can be harnessed.

He says the meeting has been initiated by both Private and Government-aided schools to discuss a headway for Kisoro schools, at all levels.

According to him, most schools were unable to complete first term syllabus in time, due to the athletics and football competitions, which affected class time.

“Primary schools spent some good time in athletic competitions. Secondary schools also spent weeks in football competitions. All this affected class work which we should see how to compensate for the lost time,” he asserted.

The arrangement appears to be a means of calling for the loosening the grip on holiday teaching, but Mbonigaba denied, insisting that the meeting is limited to sharing ideas.

“We only want to share ideas with stakeholders of the improvement of performance for Kisoro. That’s all,” He noted.

Last holidays, an operation led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajj Badru Sebyaala rounded up 47 teachers and school heads found teaching.

The operation on January 17th 2024, saw more than 46 teachers and 1 head teacher arrested for breaching government policy on the education calendar.

The move however received negative perception from some members of the public, especially educationists, who sympathised with the affected learning institutions.

Some see holiday studies as a means to complete the syllabus in time and leave learners ample time to do revision.

Meanwhile, Mr Mbonigaba threatened action on some schools that close early for holidays.

Recently, the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajj Badru Sebyaala also threatened action on schools which close before 3rd May.

Most schools, especially privately owned, closed as early as last week.

The education calendar indicates that schools should break off for holidays on May 3, and return on May 27, 2024.
