Rotarians all around the world continue to plant trees to symbolize enduring friendships and fellowship. They also do it to beautify parks and communities to contribute a greener world.
Rotary Club of Mgahinga Kisoro today participated in a tree planting exercise along the Kabale- Kisoro Highway with two major objectives in mind; to beautify Kisoro Municipality and help combat effects of Climate Change.
The members of Rotaract club of Kisoro Mgahinga planted 23 Tree Species including Prunus Africana, Acacia, Podo and Palm trees.
The group seeks to plant 100,000 trees in Kisoro Municipality over a period of five years.
Club President Niyongabo Joseph Laban said the trees will increase beauty of the town in the future years to come and also help contribute to conserving the environment.
Past President Rotarian Elizabeth Rwamwenge of Rotary Club of Kabarole supported the idea of having a five-year plan of planting more trees in the town. She said one day Kisoro will be given a tourist city status.
Members of Rotary Club Mgahinga said they are committed to conserving the environment because climate change issues have increased, and people need to do more to protect the environment.
Authorities in Kisoro Municipality have been criticized in the past for failing to manage the sanitation in the town.
However recent steps to chase roadside vendors and planting more trees and flowers show promise that the new leadership of Town Clerk Ayubu Alikwan means serious business.
Niragire Loize, Environment Officer for Kisoro Municipality appreciated the Rotaract where for contributing towards conserving the environment.
