Family seeks 6.3 Million to cover Medical bills at Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro

16-year-old admitted to Mutolere hospital needs financial assistance

St. Francis Hospital Mutolere in Kisoro district is demanding a total of 6.2 Million Shillings in doctors’ bills for a 16-year-old patient who has been admitted at the hospital for nearly six months treating a chronic bone disease in his right leg.

The patient has been identified as Jonan Mfitumukiza, a pupil at Nyagakenke Primary School and resident of Mburabuturo Village, Gisorora Parish, Nyakabande Sub County, Kisoro district.

St. Francis Hospital, Mutolere is a private, non-profit, community hospital owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kabale.

In-charge for Surgical Ward at Mutolere Hospital Aloiz Nsengiyumva explained that the disease is called Chronic Osteomyelitis.

The patient was admitted with a fracture resulting in a rotten right tibia exposed out of the skin. The affected bone also presented with a lot of pus.

“The patient suffers from chronic osteomyelitis on the right leg with a pathological fracture. On admission, he was very sick, with a dead right tibia bone exposed out of the skin having a lot of pus that led the bone to fracture, Nsengiyumva” explained.

Mfitumukiza has been receiving intravenous antibiotics, operations that include Sequestrectomy, external fixation, vacuum therapy and various x rays among other services.

Nsengiyumva states that for a period of 195 days on the surgical ward including all the other costs, the bill has risen to 6, 236,000 Ugandan shillings.

He called on the community to support the family in clearing the medical bills because the minor still requires further management which he can do while coming from his home.

Ndagijimana Geoffrey, the father to Mfitumukiza says his son has been on treatment over the same wound for over a year and yet he has six other children to care for.

According to Ndagijimana, the worrying condition of his son developed overnight, and he has not been able to get the right treatment for his son.

He called upon Members of Parliament, NGOs and other well-wishers to help him clear the hospital bill and offer any other kind of support.

His son, Mfitumukiza says he misses his old life of studying at school and playing with his friends. He hopes that one day his leg will get better. He called on the communities to support his family clear the medical bills.
