Kisoro District Potato Growers Cooperative Union has successfully managed to launch a strategic plan for resource mobilization that will ensure the growth and sustainability of the association.
The launch that took place earlier this week, in Kisoro Municipality was presided over by the Kisoro Commercial Officer Geoffrey Kazungu.
According to Kazungu, launching a strategic plan is a requirement for an organization to enable them get access to financial support from commercial banks.
Kazungu said Potato farmers in Kisoro can benefit from the union because it has the platform for them to address issues of unscrupulous middlemen, quality of seed on the market and potential markets outside Kisoro district.
Fidel Kamari, the Union chairperson said more than 92% of farmers in Kisoro district plant Irish potatoes however they have not been having a bargaining chip to access better prices and markets.
He noted that the Union has grown significantly, making strategic partners with Psalms Industries who require specific varieties of Irish potatoes like Markies and Taurus which are good for chips and crisps production.
Kamari urged more farmers in the district to join the union if they desire to see progress and growth in their business.
