Police in Kisoro is investigating circumstances under which fake medical forms are being issued out to people interested in processing new licenses as well as those renewing them.
The Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS) a project of Ministry of Works and Transport meant to improve road safety in Uganda by issuing world-class driving licenses has been camping in Kisoro district for the last five days, bringing services closer to the people.
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafiq Sekandi says, due to the high demand and strong local turnout, the mobile enrolment exercise in Kisoro district has been extended for one more day.
Sekandi says concerns have been raised among the people seeking the services that they are being extorted of their money.
Preliminary investigations from Police have revealed that unscrupulous middlemen working closely with some medical personnel in the district have been forging medical forms for sale at 30,000 Ugandan shillings.
The most aggrieved, are the boda boda riders who turned up in large numbers. Some of them, first time applicants and others seeking to renew their permits said they are disappointed in the way the exercise has been managed.
Sekandi says the racket of middlemen who have been extorting money from the public is being investigated.
He said some of the top managers in the Kisoro United Boda Boda Association (KUBO) are involved in the deal.
Sekandi cautioned all medical workers and all others involved in this scandal to stand warned because once they are caught, they will face the full hand of the law.
Over 1500 people have accessed the service of licensing and renewal of permits with more expected to come in the month of February this year.
BODA ASSOCIATION COMES UNDER FIRE
Earlier in the week, a section of boda boda riders of Bunagana stage forcefully closed the boda boda office in protest with the way the KUBO leadership is managing their finances.
The members claim that over 250 million shillings in savings has been diverted and are now demanding for an explanation.
The KUBO chairperson Robert Kalangala, who wrote the letter inviting UDLS to provide the weeklong services at the district headquarters says the allegations against him are unfounded and his management has nothing to hide.
The comments come after KUBO association has embarked on a project of constructing a two storied building along Chuho road, meant to serve as a hotel and their new offices, valued at over 2 billion shillings.
The Kisoro district Vice chairperson Alex Ndayambaje condemned the illegalities in the mobile enrolment exercise.
Ndayambaje says all those involved in the racket must refund the money to all those affected.
