Mateke Champions fight to Improve Maternal Health Care in Kisoro; Reports reveal maternal deaths on the rise during Lockdown.

The State Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who also doubles as the Kisoro district Woman Member of Parliament, has donated delivery beds at Nyabihuniko and Zindiro Health Center IIIs respectively as a way of improving the quality of life for pregnant mothers who visit health facilities in Kisoro district.

The Honorable Minister and M.P, who made her pledge to improve education and health services in the district during the last concluded general elections, is walking the talk, after having donated delivery beds to health facilities in Kanaba, Nyarusiza and Muramba Sub counties, all on her personal coin.

While addressing the media, Hon. Sarah said it is so painful to find pregnant mothers giving birth on ordinary beds or having to wait a long time before being managed by health workers just because they lack delivery beds.

“It is my intention to traverse the entire district, visiting various health facilities to see how I can support pregnant mothers. Mothers need to have a dignified delivery because the children they are bringing into this world are very precious,” said Hon. Nyirabashitsi

The Nyabihuniko HC III In charge Silas Niyonzima commended the honorable Minister for her continued support to the health sector in the district. He noted that many residents shun health facilities and choose to run to Kisoro hospital because they doubt their capabilities due to lack of equipment, however this is going to change for the better.

While at Zindiro HC III, the medical staff including Niyonzima Micheal, Micheal Tumwizere and Mbonye Evarist thanked minister Nyirabashitsi for donating a delivery bed that was highly needed at the facility.

Health Ministry Pledges Ambulance for every Constituency

The Busanza HC IV headed by Dr. Emmanuel Bahane also received a brand new ambulance from the ministry of Health to cater for emergency medical services in Bufumbira North constituency.

The ambulance registration number UG 6747 M which will be stationed at Busanza Health Centre IV was handed over by Minister Sarah Nyirabashitsi who was the chief guest at the function.

Hon.Nyirabashitsi asked the administration to handle the vehicle with care. She said that the vehicle should be used to perform the duties it was brought for and nothing else.

The Kisoro district LC5 chairperson Abel Bizimana thanked the honorable Minister for serving her people well.

Maternal deaths rise during Lock down

A daunting revelation by a nursing officer at St. Francis Mutolere has revealed that cases of maternal deaths are being recorded in the communities.

Sr. Katto Justine explained that since the Lock down, many minors (below the age of 18 years) have gotten pregnant and are experiencing many challenges.

Katto explains that many young girls are opting for abortions instead of maintaining the pregnancy for fear of their parents and community reaction.

She noted that another category of women who are shunning antenatal services which has resulted in complications at birth because they choose to produce from home, or come to the hospitals when it is too late.
