Police in Rubanda District have arrested six suspects during an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals linked to a surge in violent robberies across the area.
The overnight crackdown, conducted between midnight and 5:00 a.m. on May 3, 2026, focused on identified crime hotspots within Rubanda Town Council.
The operation was led by the District Police Commander, SP JB Tumwebaze, alongside a team from CPS Rubanda.
According to police, the suspects had been on security watch lists, with some reportedly being ex-convicts.
Those arrested have been identified as Namanya Joel, Mucunguzi Anobed, Ahimbisibwe Bruno, Agaba William, Mugisha Erias, and Akankwasa Brian.
The arrests follow increasing reports of aggravated robberies in the district, where gangs armed with machetes, knives, and stones have been ambushing late-night travelers and stealing their valuables.
Police say the suspects are currently detained at CPS Rubanda as investigations continue.
Authorities are also working to have them identified by victims, including Eng. Denis Twesigomwe of Rubanda District Local Government, who was allegedly attacked and robbed of a bag containing a laptop and UGX 4.9 million while returning from Kampala in the early hours of February 2, 2026.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson ASP Maate Elly confirmed that similar intelligence-led operations will be extended across the entire Kigezi sub-region in a bid to curb rising criminal activity.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals or activities.
