While addressing the residents on April 15th 2026 Eunice Akankwasa, an officer from the Kisoro District Environmental Department, urged communities to adopt sustainable environmental practices, including tree planting and construction of water retention tanks, as a long-term solution to persistent flooding in the area.

Akankwasa emphasized that planting trees around homes and gardens, alongside digging deep water-holding tanks, can significantly reduce the speed and impact of running water during heavy rainfall.

The Assistant Chief Administrative Officer of Kisoro District, Ngaruye Benon, echoed similar sentiments during the official launch of the fund distribution exercise highlighting the importance of proper land management and sustainable farming practices in mitigating floods and landslides.

At the community level, leaders expressed concern over the increasing damages caused by floods. Kwizera Herbert, Chairperson of Murwata Village in Sooko Parish, Muramba Sub-county, noted that the floods have destroyed crops, raising fears of food insecurity in the near future.

Others challenges affecting the area include poor road networks, limited land availability, and environmental degradation according to kwizera

Meanwhile, residents many expressing commitment in planting trees, constructing water retention systems, and investing in agriculture to recover from their losses praised the financial assistance and pledged to use the funds responsibly.
