President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a strong warning to newly elected Members of Parliament, cautioning them against engaging in corruption and bribery, which he described as “suicidal” and harmful to their political careers.

He made the remarks while speaking during the closure of a week-long retreat for NRM and NRM-leaning independent MPs at Ngoma in Nakaseke District on April 14th 2026.

The President emphasized that legislators have a constitutional duty to provide oversight over government operations and ensure accountability. He warned that involvement in corrupt practices would not only undermine their mandate but also betray their electorate and the country.

Museveni cited past corruption scandals within Parliament, noting that several MPs—including Cissy Namujju (Lwengo District Woman MP), Paul Akamba (Busiki County MP), and Yusuf Mutembule (Bunyole East MP)—were arrested over alleged involvement in syndicate corruption targeting government entities

He further directed that both those who give and receive bribes in public service should face warning, stressing that corruption must be tackled comprehensively. According to Museveni, investigations into parliamentary operations uncovered a troubling trend where some committee members allegedly solicited funds from government agencies as a condition for approving their budgets—practices he said were halted following intervention and arrests.

Museveni also called on the public to reject bribery and report any individuals involved in corrupt dealings.

In addition, Museveni urged legislators to prioritize wealth creation among their constituents. He pointed to transformation efforts in Uganda’s cattle corridor, noting that despite limited infrastructure in some high-production areas, communities have still managed to improve livelihoods through active engagement in income-generating activities hence encouraging MPs to draw lessons from such examples and guide their electorate towards sustainable wealth creation as government continues to expand development initiatives across the country.

Meanwhile the Vice president Jesca Alupo reminded newly elected Mps on the task ahead of them to foster the tenfold national economic ambition to grow Uganda’s economic to 500 billion USD through their Parliamentary role noting that government is deliberate on monetisation of the economy to end subsistancehood and ensure that all households have sustainable income flows which is a responsibility of leaders to their electorate.
