Four teachers have been recognized for their exceptional contributions to education during the month-long My Teacher My Class promotion organized by Voice of Muhabura. The campaign gave learners across the region a unique opportunity to nominate teachers who have made a meaningful impact in their schools and communities.
The winners include:
- Byamugisha Jerome – Igabiro Primary School, Bukimbiri County
- Irakiza Isaac – Nyanamo Primary School, Bufumbira North Constituency
- Kyanda Steven – Pearl High School, Kisoro Municipality
- Niragire Dez – Nyakinama Seed Secondary School, Bufumbira South Constituency
At the award ceremony, Chief Editor Julius Nkunda praised the teachers as “guiding lights for the next generation.”
While delivering a message from the Voice of Muhabura Directors, he encouraged educators to continue using their profession as a powerful tool to nurture responsible and successful learners, emphasizing the lasting influence teachers have on shaping young minds.
“Just like Nelson Mandela said, education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. You walk to classrooms every day with that power. Please use it to make this world a better place.”
The station’s Programs Director, Muhwezi Denis, highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between teachers and learners. He noted that such unity and mutual respect are key to improving academic performance and fostering a positive learning environment in schools.
He appreciated the learners and their teachers for loving and supporting Voice of Muhabura.
The awarded teachers expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition. While they noted that their work is often performed without expectation of reward, the promotion served as an affirmation that their dedication is noticed and valued by both learners and the wider community.
The guest speaker, Mr. Francis Bizoza Bigirimana, founder of The African Travelling Teacher, delivered an inspiring speech, reminding educators that their daily efforts are worth celebrating.
Speaking from experience, Mr. Bigirimana highlighted the challenges faced by rural teachers and emphasized that his organisation exists to bridge these gaps.
“As The African Travelling Teacher, we aim to inspire, empower, and connect students globally through real-world experiences. We bridge continents via transformative school collaborations, cultural exchanges, and immersive educational journeys,” he said.
He cited the partnership between Nyarutembe Community Secondary School in Kisoro, Uganda, and the Western Academy of Beijing in China, where students have shared remarkable learning experiences.
To date, Mr. Bigirimana has engaged over 5,000 learners aged 10 to 15 across Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. By combining storytelling, experiential learning, and cultural exchange, he turns travel into a powerful educational tool—fostering curiosity, resilience, and cross-border understanding among young learners.
About My Teacher My Class
The My Teacher My Class promotion is part of Voice of Muhabura’s ongoing commitment to education and community engagement. The initiative gives learners a platform to celebrate teachers who inspire, guide, and positively impact their lives, while motivating educators to continue fostering excellence in schools across the region.
During the promotion, learners were invited to call in live on air during specific hours of popular shows including Bwakeye, Umukozi, VOM Afternunz, and Evening Drive. Listeners were asked to share what made their chosen teacher unique, highlighting the qualities that set them apart in the classroom and community.
The teachers who received the most nominations were entered into a weekly draw, from which one winner was selected each week. This approach not only celebrated outstanding educators but also strengthened the bond between teachers and learners, creating a culture of appreciation and recognition.
