At least 46 Christians of Birara Catholic Church under Muhanga Parish are preparing to tie the knot after Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament Hon Eddie Kwizera Wa-Gahungu pledged to sponsor a mass wedding for them.
Hon Kwizera made the pledge as he joined the Christians for prayers on Sunday 6th October, 2024, in Bukimbiri Sub County.
He said that for a nation and church to remain strong, they need strong families laid on a strong foundation of Holy Matrimony.
“Don’t feel comfortable when your wife wants a ring and you have not put it on her finger. To build a church is not constructing this building. Its uniting Christians and making families stronger,” said Kwizera.
He invited all unwedded couples to come forward before they were registered ahead of the wedding scheduled before the end of October.
“Today, I’m here to build the church. I will arrange with the Parish Priest of Muhanga to have all of you 26 couples wedded before the end of this month.”
“I will meet all the requirements for the wedding party. I will buy 2 cows for slaughter and all the necessary rice. I will give each couple 50,000 for rings, 50,000 for church fee, and each couple will receive 2 bags of cement to contribute to the church’s construction.”
But Kwizera also advised families to work hard to increase household income, noting that every family should produce both for consumption and commercial purposes.
“As leaders, we encourage you to shift into commercial farming. Every family should have something to eat, but your production should also be enough to have something to sell so that you have money to take care of other monetary needs.” Said Kwizera.
Unwedded couples expressed happiness, saying they had longed to have the sacrament of Holy Matrimony but crippled by finances.
While leading the prayers, Catechist Tukahurirwa Donat asked couples to maintain love and perseverance as they commit to each other for a lifetime.
He said that once married, a spouse should remain committed to matrimonial vows and pray to God for strength to persevere through marriage hardships.
In a memorandum read by Hakorimana Alex, Christians of Birara Catholic Church also recognized contributions by Hon Kwizera to their church, including iron sheets, cement, sand, windows, doors, timber and financial support to the Holy Family group.
