At least 18 people who were traveling in a Toyota Hiace (drone) registration number UBG 645E today morning narrowly survived death after their vehicle lost control in Kanaba and rammed into a water drainage.
The vehicle, according to eyewitnesses was moving at a high speed and it seemed to have been overloaded with passengers.
Police say the occupants of the vehicle include 15 Congolese Nationals, who have been living in Rwamwanja Settlement Camp in Kamwenge district as refugees.
Three other occupants in the vehicle were all of Ugandan descent.
Police say the driver of the motor vehicle, Dan Batumbya 46, a resident of Kigombya Village, Gulu Ward, Mukono district lost control of the speeding vehicle while negotiating a corner at Kanaba during the morning hours of 8am.
The incident occurred at Kibande Village, Muhindura Parish, Kanaba Sub County, Kisoro district along Kabale- Kisoro Road.
Among the injured include Bahati Faustine 36 (Congolese), Bizimana Nfamushobora 38 (Congolese), Pascazia Ntawindurindi 42 (Congolese), Muhindo Oliver 17 (Congolese), Shirimpuwe Kadodo 47 (Congolese), Faraha Sifu 21 (Congolese), Eriranze Sofia 33 (Congolese), Habyarimana Ntaugirawe 36 (Congolese), Nsekera Budoma 38 (Congolese), Olivia Emerance 27 (Congolese), Nyirasinunvayo Marensi 50 (Congolese), Mukarukundo Merive 38 (Congolese), Kinamubanze Gistanve 42 (Congolese), Nzabakurikiza Ntegeimisi 41 (Congolese), Hakizimana Luke 32 (Congolese).
Others include Nyakaranbi Olivia 40 (resident of Muramba Sub County, Kisoro), Mukamutara Veneranda 38 (Muramba Sub County, Kisoro) and the driver.
ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson said the cause of accident was reckless driving of the driver and over speeding.
Maate said drivers who travel long distances should take several breaks by parking by the side of the road to get refreshed.
He noted that driving in Rubanda and Kisoro districts requires extra caution to avoid loss of lives and property in road accidents.
By Press time, Kisoro Hospital and St. Francis Hospital, Mutolere had not released an official communication on the victims.
