Residents of Ruburi Village, Kanaba Sub County, Kisoro district are distraught following the untimely death of a 17-year boy who drowned in Lake Chahafi, located in Chahafi Town Council.
The deceased has been identified as Junior Nshimiyimana.
According to the Chairperson of Fishermen on Lake Chahafi, Charles Machari, the young man paddled out in a canoe without first asking the owner for permission.
Upon reaching the deep waters, he realized the canoe had no paddles and he decided to use a stick to control the boat.
Machari says, the young man was collecting cow pasture and was attempting to cross the lake in order to get across and save time.
Machari said the young man was inexperienced and using a stick to control a moving canoe was simply a recipe for disaster.
Some fishermen in the area managed to retrieve his corpse from the water at around two days ago.
The body was handled over to the family for burial.
Machari cautioned people against using people’s canoes without permission and urged young people to always travel with an adult.
Previous fatalities on Lake Chahafi and Kayumbu have been as a result of suicides and less of accidents.
