Kenya Shujaa won the event, which doubled as an automatic qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, in 2019 in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens was not held in 2020 and 2021.

Uganda hosted and won the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens in 2017 at Legends Rugby Club. The victory earned the then defending champions a place at the Rugby World Cup in 2018.

This year’s event will double not only as a qualifier to the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa but also the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

All three medallists will qualify for a ticket to Cape Town for the World Cup on September 9-11 at the Cape Town Stadium while only the finalists will have booked their flight to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games on July 29-31 at the Coventry Stadium.
