Three people have drowned in Lake Bunyonyi in Butanda Sub County, Kabale district after a canoe in which they were sailing capsized. The deceased have been identified as Johnbosco Tumuheki, Felix Arineitwe and Firicano Turyahikayo, all residents of Katetenkora village in Nyamiryango Parish, Kabale district.

According to Tarasisio Barinde, an eye witness, the incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the canoe, which had six people on board was hit by a strong wave. Barinde says that both the deceased and survivors were heading home from a political youth meeting at Nyamiryango parish headquarters.

Another eye witness, Alex Nkwasibwe says that three of the survivors were rushed to Nyamiryango health centre II for first aid.  They were identified as Agnes Kabuzi, Suzan Tayewa and Tito Kanyonyozi, all residents of Katetenkora.

Nkwasibwe says that they are unable to retrieve bodies of the deceased. He adds that none of the sailors had a life jacket.

In June this year, two people from Muko sub-county, Rubanda district drowned in the same lake while travelling in a canoe, yet similar incidents have been witnessed and several lives lost under similar circumstances over the years.

In 2015, President Yoweri Museveni pledged to provide a ferry, since the only available means of transport is by boat to the districts of Kabale and Rubanda. However, the pledge has never been fulfilled.
