A Security Guard at Nyabihuniko Health Centre III in Chahi Sub County is detained at Chahi Police Post for allegedly stealing several properties from the Health Unit.
Byaruhanga Godfrey, a resident of Nyabwishenya Sub County in Kisoro district is accused of stealing drugs, mattresses, beds and health kits.
The suspect was posted for night duty, which played to his advantage to steal the items under the cover of darkness.
Ayinkamiye Agnes, the in charge at Nyabihuniko health Centre III told us they have been suspecting Byaruhanga because he would not report lost property.
This prompted a search operation at his residence where missing items were recovered.
“We called for a meeting to address the loss of property at the health centre, but the security guard boycotted the meeting despite being invited. We later resolved to check at his residence but he refused to come out when we called him. When we forcefully entered, we found him sleeping on a mattress labelled Nyabihuniko Health Centre III,” said the in charge.
According to Ayinkamiye, items found at the suspects home include one mattress, aprons, medicine and testing kits.
She however adds that other missing items including a gas cylinder, mattresses and old beds were not recovered.
The Chahi Sub-County LCIII Chairperson, Richard Nsabimana, suspects that Byaruhanga could have stolen the items during the transfer of the in charge.
“He used the period when the staff were being transferred to steal these materials. He has now been arrested and is detained at Chahi Sub County Headquarters.” He said.
Meanwhile, Byaruhanga admits to have taken the mattress and other items for personal use before he could raise enough funds to buy his own.
Sources from Kisoro Police say they are still investigating the incident before arraigning him before courts of law.
