The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has suspended campaigns for the Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, pending a meeting of candidates with the party chairperson.
Reliable sources say that all the 13 candidates vying for the NRM flag in the by-election were summoned to meet NRM party Chairperson, also Uganda’s President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The meeting is expected to take place this Sunday, October 13.
A reliable source said the candidates left Kisoro to Kampala on Friday, for a quick Covid-19 test, ahead of the meeting scheduled to take place at State House Entebbe.
Although the agenda of the meeting has not been revealed to http://www.vomuhabura.com, some allege that the meeting could aim at tasking some candidates to withdraw from the race.
Last week, Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament, Eddie Kwizera Wa-Gahungu revealed that about 5 of the 13 candidates were to pull out, and their names would be announced on Monday October 7, which did not metamorphose.
This had followed a closed-door meeting with the candidates, attended by the NRM Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda, Dr Chris Baryomunsi.
The race has attracted candidate that include former occupant of the seat, Rose Kabagyeni, former contestant Aphia Uwamahoro, Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, Dushime Sylivia, Igiraneza Winfred Faith, Irankunda Jemimah and Kitentera Blessed.
Others are Mahirwe Irene, Mbonye Hellen, Nirere Fancy Brendah, Niyikiza Louise, Nkurikiye Allen and Twizere Eva.
The seat fell vacant when the occupant Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi died at Nsambya Hospital early last month.
The released NRM campaign program indicated that the candidates would Friday jointly hold rallies at Chahi Sub County headquarters to meet resident of Chahi Sub County and Cyanika Town Council.
According to the roadmap, the joint campaigns were scheduled to close on 24th October 2024, and polls slated for 25th October by lining behind candidates, their agents, or posters.
On Thursday, the candidates gathered at Shaza playgrounds to rally for support from voters of Kisoro Municipality, followed by an evening campaign at Nyakinama Sub County headquarters.
Kisoro NRM elections officer, Mujyambere Thadeo, advised the candidates and their supporters to refrain from indiscipline throughout the campaign trail.
Mujambere warned against carrying campaign materials such as T-shirts, photos, or portraits to rallies, and hate speech.
