A new-born baby girl has been found dumped in Gisha cell, Chahafi Town Council, Kisoro district.
The baby, whose relatives remain unknown was found at around 9am by children who were collecting pasture for the cattle.
The Gisha LC1 Chairperson, Joseph Rwamirera told Voice of Muhabura that the children were gathering pasture near the home of Rev Canon Gapfuyekubaho, when they heard the baby crying.
“It was discovered by children who were gathering pasture. They immediately informed their grandfather, Can Gapfuyekubaho, who later called us as leaders,” He said.
“We immediately called the in charge of Chahafi Health Centre IV who came and picked the baby. We informed police but they had not yet come,” added Rwamirera.
According to Rwamirera, when the children heard the sound of the baby crying, they thought it was a cat, but were shocked to see a new born baby crying.
He says that they are cooperating with other leaders to identify the baby’s mother for consequent punishment.
“We don’t suspect anyone who dumped their child. But as leaders, we are investigating this incident to identify the culprit,” noted the LC1 Chairperson.
Police said they were yet to receive the information by publication time.
The shocking incident comes after Saturday’s Bishop’s Walk, which was aimed at gathering support for Potter’s Village Children’s Medical Centre.
The medical centre is home to vulnerable children, who are abandoned by their mothers, or born prematurely and others.
A total of over 200 million shillings was raised in both cash and pledges, and items supplied.
Speaking during the function, Bishop Godfrey Mbitse remarked that the collected items should not encourage mothers to abandon their babies, but work hard to support their children with love and passion.
