Leaders from Kisoro district have slammed the celebration of 39th National Resistance Movement (NRM) Liberation Day over unfulfilled pledges.
This year, Uganda will commemorate Liberation Day under the theme: “39 Years of NRM/A: Salutations to Those Who Re-Sanctified Our Homeland.”
The national event will take place at Mubende National Teachers’ College Campus, Mubende District on 26th January, 2025.
But Kisoro district Councilor for People with disabilities (PWDs) Baker Niyigaba criticized the NRM government for its failure to combat corruption and embezzlement of public funds that has affected service delivery.
“When we make our demands, they are neglected and the corrupt individuals make their priorities. They swindle the money and no development reaches the lower level,” said Niyigaba.
Corruption has been the main impediment to Uganda’s development, according to Niyigaba.
“The NRM pledged to fight corruption. We would be at the level of countries like Qatar and Singapole. But this government has failed to fight corruption.”
The NRM government has failed to fulfill key pledges like tourism roads and John Kale Institute of Science and Technology, Nyakinama Sub County LC5 Councilor, Emmanuel Ndayisaba says.
“We’ve been promised tourism roads for over 15 years. Other districts are doing well, but Kisoro lags behind, with our love for movement (NRM). If you look at districts with strong opposition, they can’t be compared to Kisoro that supports NRM 100 per cent,” argued Ndayisaba.
But Kisoro district NRM Vice Chairperson, Ndikuyeze Ramathan acknowledged the party’s remarkable achievements in the last 39 years.
Ndikuyeze says that divisions amongst leaders, especially Members of Parliament who are a driving factor in service delivery, is partly to blame.
He emphasized that MPs should be blamed for failing to work together to lobby for government projects.
“We still demand some pledges from NRM, but we are partly to blame for stalled projects. Internal conflicts have failed our district. How can you develop while you are not working together? We are the bad people, not NRM,” said Ndikuyeze, who now aims for the Kisoro Municipality mayoral seat.
Unfulfilled pledges were partly responsible for the NRM’s loss in the recent by-election.
Indipendent and Oppostion Candidates campaigned that people’s poor living conditions were to blame on NRM’s unfulfilled pledges.
