Independent candidates have won the residual elections organized on Monday in Kisoro district. The electoral commission organized the polls in elective areas where the election was called off due to either violence or irregularities on the ballots.
In Kisoro, elections were held for the LC3 Female Councillor for Bunagana Ward A in Bunagana Town Council and the LC5 Councillor for Mupaka Town Council.
In Bunagana, the race was between NRM’s Nzamukosha Niziya and Tumuramye Grace. According to the declaration form signed by the Kisoro District Returning Officer Nayebare Daniel, independent candidate Tumuramye Grace worn the race having polled 210 votes, against Niziya’s 104.
Musabyimana John Bosco also an independent candidate won as the LC5 Councillor for Mupaka Town Council, beating NRM’s Ndagijimana George. Musabyimana garnered 1,242 votes against Ndagijimana’s 997.
In the election of LC5 Councillors, at least 8 NRM flag bearers were also trounced by independent candidates, and this was followed by a National Unity Platform candidate beating an NRM flagbearer for LC3 Councillor for Busamba ward, Southern Division in Kisoro Municipality.
Asked what this meant for the NRM party, Mr Ramathan Ndikuyeze, the Kisoro NRM Vice Chairperson said that their loss is like a drop in the ocean, adding that Kisoro is a stronghold of NRM, having voted for only NRM MPs and become the 7th district to support the party countrywide.
