Borussia Dortmund have announced that Marco Rose will be their next permanent manager after agreeing a deal for the Borussia Monchengladbach boss to take over in the summer.

The Black and Yellow are having an out-of-sorts season with a place in the Bundesliga top four in doubt after sacking head coach Lucien Favre in December, with Edin Terzic currently in charge on an interim basis.

A long-term target of Dortmund’s, Rose, 44, has enjoyed a rapid rise over the last four years after success with Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and then Bundesliga rivals Monchengladbach.

Here, Sportsmail gives the lowdown on Dortmund’s new man in charge and his journey in management so far…

Made his name in youth football

After retiring as a player at Mainz, he was given the managerial role of the side’s reserve team before spending a season as the senior manager of Lokomotive Leipzig in the Oberliga, the fifth tier of German football.

It was Rose’s switch to youth football that saw him really begin to make his name, though, working his way through Salzburg’s junior teams after moving to the city of Mozart in 2013.

His most notable achievement was undoubtedly guiding the Salzburg U18 team to an unexpected first ever UEFA Youth League triumph in 2016-17 when the manager had only recently reached his 40s himself.

Rose’s talented side beat the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona before beating a Benfica that had the likes of Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix.

Continued miracles with Salzburg first team

It wasn’t long before that triumph was rewarded with the top job at Salzburg, taking over from Oscar Garcia for the 2017-18 season.

His fast-paced and high energy style would see him continue to work wonders in senior management, guiding Salzburg to the Austrian title and alerting future employers Dortmund to his powers by beating them on the way to reaching the Europa League semi-final in his first season.

Rose made the Red Bull Arena a fortress over his two seasons in charge, impressively not losing a single home game as he guided them to another Austrian Bundesliga title before leaving for Monchengladbach.

While it was only a short time together, Rose crossed paths with now Dortmund star Erling Haaland who arrived in the January of 2019. It is believed the pair have a good relationship which bodes well if Haaland stays on at Dortmund past this season.

Kept rising at Monchengladbach

With Rose now well on the radar of Dortmund, the manager opted to continue his development by taking over at Bundesliga rivals Monchengladbach.

The manager made a remarkable start as boss, guiding the Foals to the top of the German top flight at December before eventually finishing in a Champions League place in his first season.

Rose, with his experience at developing youth, has overseen the growth of two of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents, Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea.

This season, Rose’s side pipped Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk to a place in the Champions League knock-out stages and will now face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the last 16. With the European scalps Rose has already claimed during his career, the Premier League leaders know it will be no easy task.

Influenced by former Dortmund manager Klopp

Europe’s worst-kept secret is now out and Rose has been confirmed as BVB’s new head coach for 2021-22, cue the inevitable comparisons with old friend Jurgen Klopp, whom he was a team-mate of for one season and was then managed by as a player at Mainz.

But his occasional tendency to wear a baseball hat on the sidelines isn’t the only thing he shares in common with one of his predecessors. The new man’s attacking, high-pressing way of playing and emotional sideline antics have clear shades of the Liverpool boss.

Klopp has given Rose a glowing endorsement in the past, too, once telling German TV: ‘I trust Marco in everything. Marco can have any job and could do any job too, he is really the most hyped [coach] of all at the moment, everyone is asking about you.’

If Rose goes on to achieve anything like what Klopp did at Dortmund, he is sure to be a fan favourite at the Signal Iduna Park.
