National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine pulled crowds when he witnessed the nomination of his party’s candidate, Tana Mukankwaya Salim.
Six women have so far been nominated for the Kisoro District Woman Representative to Parliament seat.
They are NRM’s Rose Kabagyeni, and FDC’s Juliet Musanase who were nominated on Wednesday, on the first day of the 2-day nomination exercise.
Tana Mukankwaya Salim of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, Akifeza Grace Ngabirano and Chimpaye Aisha were nominated on Thursday, 31st October.
Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party presented Ingabire Mable to carry the flag, following an internal party consensus with her opponent, Susan Natukunda.
Chimpaye Aisha, who missed the nomination exercise on Wednesday because of late coming, was nominated Thursday morning on the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) ticket.
Kabagyeni was nominated on Wednesday by Daniel Nayebare, Kisoro District Electoral Commission Returning Officer. After nomination, Kabagyeni, the former Senior Presidential Advisor on Agriculture, held a rally at Kisoro Mayors Gardens in Kisoro municipality where she pledged to revive unity among the people of Kisoro and advocate for the district development once elected.
Electoral Commission Officials however turned away Aisha Chimpaye, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Party flag bearer for turning up late for the nominations.
Chimpaye arrived at 4:58 pm, but Nayebare argued that he could not nominate a candidate past the required time of 5:00 PM. He advised Chimpaye to return on Thursday.
Ms Akifeza, who lost in the NRM primaries by a margin of 744 votes will compete for the seat on the independent ticket.
Bobi Wine unexpectedly hit Kisoro streets, pulling crowds from different directions.
NUP supporters – clad in NUP’s popular red outfits – unexpectedly marched through Kisoro town with Kyagulanyi’s convoy.
Security which had earlier been mobilised from both the UPDF and Police allowed Bobi Wine and the team to progress from Pioneer Mall and through Kisoro town without any interruption.
Kyagulanyi was in the company of Mr Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP party General Secretary, and Francis Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP.
The musician cum politician promised to return in two days’ time to campaign for his party candidate.
“Kisoro has not developed because you people do not vote for the opposition. I urge you to support the young generation preparing as you prepare for the future,” said Kyagulanyi, as he spoke to crowds at Kisoro Pioneer Mall.
He described Tana as a very hardworking leader with a sharp and intelligent mind, who will help Kisoro people to achieve their targets, once voted.
Meanwhile, 7 other candidates were nominated for positions of local government councillors.
The candidates were nominated by Kisoro district returning officer, Daniel Nayebare, at Kisoro district council hall.
According to the Electoral Commission calendar, the election is set for November 14, 2024, following the death of Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who died on September 7 after suffering a heart attack.
Meanwhile, a total of 7 candidates were nominated for positions of Councillors in the District Local Government.
