At least 200 eucalyptus tree seedlings have been planted by the local leaders of Buhozi parish in Busanza Sub-County, Kisoro district at Buhozi HCIII as a way of protecting the Government land from encroachers.
Busanza LCV Councilor Hagabimana Joram, with the support of several area LC I chairpersons and some community members decided to plant trees to ensure that the land will be available for future Government projects.
Eucalyptus trees are best known for their ability to reduce soil erosion as well as surface run-off especially in hilly areas.
Hagabimana said Land grabbing in Uganda remains a contentious issue and this often affects service delivery.
He noted that the tree planting project has a two -fold advantage because the trees will grow and communities can benefit from timber sales as well as firewood at household level.
Hagabimana said tree planting is one of the strategies used to protect the environment from adverse climate change effects.
Esau Emmanuel Twesiime, Buhozi Parish LC II commended the community for coming together to plant trees. He called on Government to utilize the land to construct schools so that children in the area can benefit from free education.
Habiyaremye Spiriano, LCI Ruvumu village called on communities to be mindful of people who come seeking to purchase the land adding that such elements have increased over the years.
He advised cattle keepers who have been utilizing the land to be mindful of the young seedlings and not to destroy them because all efforts to plant trees will have been wasted.
