The Wakiso Baleens, flanked by their star player and Captain Lucky Nirere put on an impressive show, facing little resistance from a determined Kisoro side, however Courage was not enough to save the day.

Under a campaign, dubbed “Let the girl Play”, more girls from Kisoro are being encouraged to develop their talent through the Sport of Rugby.

Nirere, a Mufumbira says her life has been extraordinary because of her passion for Rugby League.

She commended the Kisoro Sharks for playing a good game.

She said the biggest challenge female players in Kisoro face is lack of consistency and a regular Coach to support them harness their natural given talents.

16-year-old Nirere has been involved with Rugby for as long as she can remember.

In 2015, Nirere won a competition to travel to England for the Rugby World Cup and present the match ball at five matches – including Australia’s tense Pool A victory over Wales at Twickenham.

Nirere’s mother and head Coach for the Rugby League Academy Fortunate Irankunda says at least six girls have been selected from the Kisoro Sharks to join Baleen.

According to Irankunda, this will give the girls an opportunity to showcase their talent and stand a chance to be recruited into an academy for Elite players.

She urged parents to let more girls play sports especially Rugby League despite people’s misconceptions about the game.

“People are so afraid that if they play Rugby League, they will get injured. This is not true because it is a simple game played by intelligent people”, Irankunda explained.

As a head Coach and Rugby Educator, Irankunda says Kisoro youth are naturally endowed when it comes to strength and conditioning because of the nature of the terrain in Kisoro that requires some form of fitness to lead an ordinary life.

She further noted that the Rugby league has managed to attract a partnership with York Knights and Valkyrie who are eager to develop local talents in Uganda.

Kisoro Sharks Irankunda Bright said it is a great opportunity to have played Baleens and being able to learn from them.
