A baby shower, according to www.parents.com, is a party attended by friends and family to celebrate the impending birth of a new baby and ‘shower’ the mum to be with love and good wishes.

Growing up in a traditional Kisoro setting, giving birth to children is not considered a privilege but an obligation, from parents and a watchful, opinionated community.

Recent research conducted back in 2020 indicates that there is an increase over time in the percentage of women, both rural and urban, who want to delay their first and second pregnancy.

Some couples make a conscious choice to wait because of work opportunities while others try with their might but as the saying goes, God’s timing is the best.

With the changing mindset revolving around child bearing these days, Baby showers present an excellent opportunity to wish an expectant mother success in parenthood.

How to pull off a successful Baby Shower

Secrecy is Key

The idea is for your partner (Pregnant wife, fiancé or girlfriend) not to get wind of the plan otherwise the element of surprise will simply go out the wind.

Prince Trevor Mugenga says he engaged a trusted friend of his wife who advised him to create a whatsup group where he included a few friends.

Use the platform to communicate to friends and family the plans and raise funds to make it a success. Stick to planning and avoid using the group for other business.

Choose a Suitable Venue and time

It is important to choose a place that is fairly private and within your budget.

Plan well to avoid colliding with other outgoing revelers.

Ensure that the time of meeting is convenient for invited friends and family. The event should not take more than three hours, those who wish to stay a little longer are welcome, as long as the drinks and music hold out.

Consider your Partner’s Personality

It is very important to know what your partner’s likes and dislikes. This will help you decide the theme of the event, friends to invite, her favorite colors, best music, foods etc.

To keep the mood light, it helps to plan for plenty of Alcohol, meat and for the teetotalers, plan for tea or coffee.

Don’t forget gifts and a Cake

Expectant mothers are exactly that, expectant!

Do not forget to carry a gift with you. The gifts can be for the baby or even for the mother to be. This is very important.

Visiting a baby shop or a Supermarket in the area can help you make the selection much easier.

A Cake is very important, take my word for it! (Word to the Organizer)

Budgeting is Vital

Planning for a venue, drinks, music and photography requires you to seriously consider your source of money.

Friends and family are often eager to support you but you must come up with a budget with clearly mentioned items.

Some of your friends might choose to cover some items, so do not be afraid to ask your trusted friends for help, today it is me, tomorrow it is you.

Reactions

Prince Trevor Mugenga says, the first baby shower he tried to organize was not successful because someone tipped his wife off but the second one was perfect.

“Am grateful to my friends who showed my wife and I such love and support. I also want to thank God because he is the one who blesses families with children”, Mugenga said

Baby Showers are a joyful memory for the couple

Godfrey Muneza, an entrepreneur and bicycle dealer in Kisoro says, the idea of baby shower was completely foreign to him but after being encouraged by friends, he went for it.

“I didn’t think it would work but my friends made it so beautiful and my wife was overjoyed. I am so glad I organized a baby shower for her, seeing her so happy is one of my best memories”, Muneza said

Mubiru Junior of Kisoro Megapixs says he wanted to take pictures of his beautiful, round and heavy wife.

“I mobilized a handful of friends to support me and within a few hours, the budget had been covered. My wife had no idea what was happening. On the D- day, I simply took a walk with her to Mondi and boom, all her friends were their waiting to welcome her with gifts, it was such a joyful evening”, Mubiru says
