Radio Story moves Lions Club Kisoro to support Starving Mother of 3 with relief worth UGX 300,000

As the people of Kisoro district and the entire country anxiously await for President Museveni to decide their fate today, following the conclusion of a tough 42 day lock down, It was a day of joy and thanksgiving for 26 year old Joan Nyiraguhirwa, a resident of Zindiro village Northern division in Kisoro Municipality who received relief support worth UGX 300,000 from Lions Kisoro.

Joan Nyiraguhirwa, who is currently seven months’ pregnant and is a mother to three children appeared on Voice of Muhabura news, on July 27th 2021 after she appealed to the Kisoro Judicial system to offer mercy to her husband who has been in Jail, on allegations of defilement.

Nyiraguhirwa told Voice of Muhabura that since her husband and bread winner had been in jail, her young family had not eaten anything and at one point, she strongly considered taking her own life.

The story that was aired and published on vomuhabura.com managed to attract the attention of Lions Kisoro which came toward to offer food relief as well as a cash contribution to support the young family.

Second Vice President Lions Club of Kisoro Caroline Mugisha said members of the charitable club were deeply moved after hearing the story on the radio.

Mugisha handed over an envelope with a cash contribution of UGX 80,000 Shillings along with 25kgs of Rice, 25kgs of Maize Flour, (Posho), 5kgs of Beans and  5 bars of washing soap

Mugisha noted that Lions Club, which currently has over 20 members, is deeply concerned about the marginalized and the helpless especially during this period of Lock down.

The General Secretary of Lions Club Kisoro Enoce Ndizeye said Joan’s cry for help must not be taken for granted because she took courage to speak out on a problem many Ugandans are facing. He noted that members of Lions Club do not have much but we had to mobilize amongst ourselves to help others because suffering is better than dying while giving is even better than receiving.

A joyful Joan Nyiraguhirwa said she is so happy with all the well wishers who managed to come to her aid after hearing the story on Voice of Muhabura.

When asked by the reporter what she would have done, if she had not been reached by the radio, after a long pause lost in thought, Joan looked up to me and said she was prepared to buy some drugs and give herself an overdose because she had run out of options for her babies and herself but she is glad that someone out their heard her cry and came to her rescue.

The Managing director of Voice of Muhabura Prince Trevor Mugenga who is also a member of Lions Kisoro said times like these, when a deadly Pandemic like COVID 19 has left families and businesses’ struggling is, the best time for the radio to bring out the true stories of people.

Prince explained that more people out there are still suffering and the radio will do its best to bridge the gap using its on-air and On-line platforms.

“It is when we air such stories that we are able to determine what kind of communities we have in Kisoro and I have come to realize that, the people of Kisoro are kind, caring and willing to help others, let us keep up the spirit. The radio is always here to serve,” said Prince
