KISORO – The Kisoro District Traffic Police Officer has revealed that a team from Uganda National Roads Authority has started surveying all corners from Echuya forest reserve to Nyakabande to create strong roadside barriers that will reduce on the daily accidents on the same road.

Speaking to Voice of Muhabura, Tumuheirwe William said that the team has started visiting accident black spots, especially at Kagezi in Kanaba Sub County, to ensure that there is provision of strong barriers and trees which will help them reduce the daily accidents.

He says that the strong barriers will prevent traffic from swerving off the road, thereby reducing the damage extent. The current roadside barriers are metallic, but have not been providing a strong blockade to traffic against swerving off the road.

Tumuheirwe warned boda boda riders against illegally carrying passengers and riding beyond time at terrific speed, which poses them to danger as well. Some motorcyclists can be seen at night riding at breakneck speed with lights off and on, in order to dodge security with their passengers.

Accidents

Recent two accidents have claimed 5 people in a space of two months. Hillary Namanya and Barbra Natukunda, who were coming from Kabale to Kisoro for a scientific wedding died on spot on June 5, when their vehicle, UAG 044M swerved off the road at Kanaba. Rachael Guhirwa, whom they accompanied for the wedding was the only survivor and successfully wedded late June.

On 27th the same month, on the same spot, another ugly crash claimed three lives of Hatanga Wilson, Semahane Evarist and Mutabazi Charles, at around 6:40 pm.

The worst accident was in July 2018 when a truck carrying traders overturned, killing 22 people, some on spot, others later on admission.
