According to police, the incident happened on Friday, May 8, 2026. It is alleged that at around 2:00pm, the boy locked the door of his room from inside before reportedly passing through the window and disappearing to an unknown place.

Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, ASP Elly Maate, said that later in the evening at around 7:30pm, the child returned home where his mother, Kentaro Evelyn, questioned him about where he had been. Instead of responding, he allegedly ran away again to an unknown destination.

Tragically, at around 9:00pm, the boy was discovered hanging on a coffee plant using a banana fiber by his elder sister, identified as Nduhukire Ruth. The family immediately informed the area police.

The District Police Commander together with a team of officers visited the scene and recorded statements from relevant witnesses to aid investigations.

Police later handed over the body to relatives for burial as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

ASP Maate urged the public to remain vigilant about the mental and emotional wellbeing of children and encouraged parents and guardians to closely monitor and support young people facing emotional distress.
