Fuel prices in Kisoro District have surged sharply, with petrol now retailing between shs5,800-6,000 per liter of petrol and diesel at shs5,500, raising concern among residents—especially boda boda riders and motorists—who are calling on the government to intervene and stabilize the situation.
On Wednesday evening at Kyamps Petrol Station in Kisoro,a liter of petrol was at shs6,000 while other were at shs5580 others at shs5990
The price hike has also led to emerging fuel shortages at several stations across the district.
Operators attribute the disruption to challenges in global oil supply, noting that business is no longer running normally as customers resist fare increases.
Kata Henry, supervisor at Champs Petrol Station in Kisoro, says the situation has worsened in recent days, with fewer fuel trucks arriving compared to before. He has called on the government to urgently address supply gaps and help stabilize prices.
Batamukoraho Baker, Secretary for boda boda operators in Kisoro, estimates that about 20% of riders have been forced to abandon their work due to the rising cost of fuel, significantly affecting incomes and daily livelihoods.
He is now urging the government to take immediate measures to cushion consumers from further increases, warning that the situation threatens transport services and the broader local economy. He also cautioned that crime rates could rise if more boda boda riders are pushed out of work.
