Health workers across Kisoro District have been warned against alcoholism and absenteeism.
The warning was issued on Thursday 5th March, during an engagement meeting with health centre in-charges held at the Kisoro District Council Hall.
Kisoro District Health Officer, Dr. Bosco Muhangi, expressed concern over reports that some clinical officers report to work while drunk. He said such behaviour is unacceptable and warned that those found guilty risk being expelled from service.
Dr. Muhangi also cautioned health workers against absenteeism, noting that some staff spend time on personal activities instead of performing their official duties. He warned that disciplinary action would be taken against those who fail to comply with their responsibilities.
“I want to inform all of you that it in unacceptable to appear on duty when you are intoxicated. If you want to abuse alcohol, do it in your own free time, but not working hours,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Resident District Commissioner, Hajji Badru Sebyara, praised the work done by health workers in Uganda and encouraged them to continue serving their communities diligently.
“Whether the money is not enough, whether the medicine is nit there, don’t say we elected Museveni…. no. first help them. You are the Museveni there,” said Hajj Sebyara.
Hakizimana Martin, the LC5 councillor for Muramba Sub County and Secretary for Social Services in the district, said some health workers have neglected their duties to focus on personal businesses, particularly following the recent salary enhancement. He called for stronger supervision by the district’s top leadership.
“What surprises me is that after salary enhancement, it’s when some of you have decided to channel your attention to private business, hence abandoning what’s making you earn big. Love your vocation, love your job and do it diligently,” Mr Hakizimana said.
The Chief Administrative Officer, John Nyakahuma, also warned against incompetence among health workers, saying it has contributed to declining service delivery. He cautioned that those who fail to perform their duties will be replaced.
He warned them against going for further studies without official permission.
“There are practices where an in-charge goes for further studies and leaves someone in their position. Where do you get such powers? The Public Service Standing Orders are made in such a way that dismissing you is easy,” warned Mr Nyakahuma.
