KISORO: Teachers and students in Kisoro district have cried to the government to reopen schools if it must maintain the relevancy of the education culture in the country.

Schools have been closed for almost two years now, despite a partial reopening on a few classes before the second lockdown was announced by the president in June this year.

According to the Kabami secondary school head teacher Sebucuruzi Fred, it is not wise for the government to consider reopening public transport system over schools yet it is hard to monitor buses and taxis over school going children. He decries the likelihood of two sets of students in one class especially senor ones and senior Fives.

“I wonder why the government has not opened schools over buses that carry Congolese from Bunagana border to Kampala without plenty supervision of SOPs,” says Sebacuruzi.

The Bufumbira Vocational secondary school (BAVOS) head teacher, Niyera Christian says that he is worried that senior one senior five students may be granted automatic promotions yet they have studied little of their syllabus.

“I’m Worried because we broke off due to covid-19 before senior one and senior five students had done their promotional exams, on top of that they had covered little of their syllabus and promoting them automatically is a disaster to their academic journey,” Christian noted.

St. Paul’s Mutolere boys’ secondary school Deputy Head Teacher of says that the government must intervene as soon as possible because handling two classes in one is unfair. She however says that automatic promotions can help.

“We are waiting for the government’s intervention because it is unfair to have two sets of students in one class. If the government decides that there be automatic promotions, well and good,” said Asiimwe.

Meanwhile, students who spoke to voice of Muhabura say they are losing hope on education due to over staying at their homes. Females say that government should reopen schools because they are being tempted to get married because they are too idle.

“We are asking the government to open up schools because we have started losing hope, getting unwanted pregnancies while others are getting married,” students lamented.
