A total of 713,246,565 shillings has been allocated by Kisoro district local Government meant to support activities in the Works department including the construction of 20 water tanks, 2 piped water supply systems, one VIP latrine and 4 spring protection in 12 sub counties across the district.
The revelation was made by Kisoro district Water officer Cranmer Mberwa.
According to a summary plan seen by Vomuhabura of the second quarter running from October to December in financial year 2021-2022, 12 communal rain water tanks of 25,000 liters capacity will be constructed in Muramba, Kanaba, Bukimbiri, Nyarusiza, Chahi, Murora and Nyakinama sub counties.
The summary plan also indicates that only eight Institutional tanks will be constructed in some primary schools located in Murora sub county, Nyakabande, Nyarubuye, Bukimbiri, Nyarusiza, Nyundo and Kanaba sub counties while two piped water supply systems will be constructed in Nyarutembe and Rutaka parishes of Kirundo and Nyabwishenya sub counties.
Kabaya and Gitovu villages in Busanza Sub County, Kageyo village in Nyarubuye Sub County and Mugombwa village in Nkuringo town council will also have their water springs rehabilitated.
Kisoro district headquarters is also set to benefit on the said monies through the construction of a modern Ventilated Improved Pit latrine.
More than 266 million shillings was spent by the works department in the first quarter of financial year 2021/2022 to implement water and sanitation activities in the district.
Kisoro district continues to suffer from water shortage due to its high altitude and hilly terrain.
