The Senior Assistant Town Clerk for Central Division in Kisoro Municipality, Angelo Mfitundinda has commended Tuku tuku operators for joining hands and cleaning parts of the town that have been littered with plastics and other garbage.
Kisoro Municipality has been facing a challenge of a lot of garbage waste especially plastics and Kaveera causing a negative impact on perception of the new Municipality which was once declared one of the cleanest town councils in Uganda.
The Tuku Tuku association in Kisoro officially started their cleaning partnership with Kisoro municipality yesterday and will continue to clean the town every first Wednesday of every new month.
Mfitundinda called upon corporate companies and organizations operating within and around Kisoro Municipality to join the fight against rubbish and garbage in the town as a way of Social Corporate Responsibility.
The Kisoro Tuku tuku United Operators (TUKO) chairperson, Nzabonimpa Alex commended his members for embracing the cause and asked other local associations to do the same because Kisoro can only be kept clean by Kisoro residents.
The Municipality, under the leader of Haruna Kamba engaged garbage collection company BIN-IT services to partner with the municipality but no reply has been made since the official application two months ago.
In efforts to minimize the pressing challenge of garbage, the municipality bought land in Nyakabande Sub County to act as a landfill however its effectiveness is yet to be realized.
Mfitundinda says everyone must bear the burden of maintaining sanitation in the town. He further cautioned a section of the Batwa people who go through garbage looking for empty plastic bottles and food.
According to Mfitundinda, they usually find sacks of garbage put by the roadside waiting for pickup and they pour everything down and take the sack, which is very wrong.
He further cautioned people who urinate in plastic bottles and throw them with the green spaces of the town especially people who come to the new market for trade.
