Books for Development, a U.S non- profit Organization has donated a total of 75,000 textbooks to learners at Chuho Primary School, Nyakabande Sub County, Kisoro district.
Key among the books, is the English dictionary, aimed at helping learners understand the subjects better as well as improving their communication by using the words correctly.
Chuho primary school is a government aided school with a current enrolment of 464 pupils and 10 teachers.
Other books donated by Books for Development include Encyclopedias, Vocational books (plumbing, electrical wiring, carpentry) and National Geographic textbooks among others.
Peggy Burck, Vice President of Development said she became involved in the mission to end the book famine that exists in developing countries in 2010 and made her first trip to Uganda in 2011.
The Organization has managed to support Seventeen major Community Libraries including Adjumani, Arua Children’s Library, Erussi, Koboko, Logiri, Maracha, Moyo, Nebbi, Okollo, Pakwach, Parambo, Rhino Camp, Omugo, Panyimur, Yumbe, Wadelai and Zombo.
Coordinator of Wildlife Clubs of Uganda in Kisoro, Agaba Denis said the program will extend to other schools like Muganza primary school in Chahi sub-county, Rukongyi primary school in Nyarusiza and Seseme girls secondary school in Kisoro municipality.
Samuel Bakiza, Head teacher of Chuho primary school thanked Books for Development organization for donating books to the school where he promised both the learners and staff will utilize them to improve on both their written and spoken English at school.
Christian Niyera, Inspector of schools Kisoro District Local Government encouraged the school management Committee to be allowing community members and neighboring schools access the books because they have the capacity to positively captivate more people to better their lives through reading.
Books for Development organization is set to visit other schools including Rukongi primary school in Nyarusiza sub-county where they shall provide funds that will build a new and accessible library.
