Professor of Counselling Psychology at Kabale University, Professor Edward Bantu has said Kigezi region is set to benefit from the first ever, Psychotraumatology center.
According to Professor Bantu, Kabale University is going ahead to establish a center of excellence in psychotraumatology which will help mitigate some of the conditions that are unassessed in communities.
A recent report reveals that more than 14 million Ugandans are living with serious mental health conditions.
Professor Bantu says center specializing in Psycho-social support will offer services to Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defense Forces and Uganda Prisons’ Service.
“There is a great psychological need among the officers which needs to be managed in order for them not be hindered in their work ethic”. Bantu explained.
More than 100 students from Kabale University pursuing Social works and Social administration (SWASA) visited St. Francis Hospital Mutolere to offer psychosocial support.
Lecturer of Social Work, Social Administration and Governance, Kabale University Adebayo Sanni Tajudeen says the students are encouraged to practice what they are learning.
Tajudeen explained that, as part of Social Corporate Responsibility, Kabale University visits various health facilities in Kigezi region to offer support and to create a strong relationship with communities.
Dr. Twine Gelverse Mantombo says the students are given an opportunity to interact with patients and offer counseling services.
He noted that many patients experience a lot of challenges during the covid-19 lockdown.
According to Dr. Mantombo, psychosocial support is paramount for any human being to live a fully functional life.
