The Kisoro district Chief Administrative officer Ismail Onzu Musa has confirmed that Kisoro nurses are set to receive payment of lunch allowances for the months of July and August amounting to 250 million shillings.
The revelation was made during an exclusive interview with Voice of Muhabura.
Onzu explained that the district did not have enough money to pay the health workers consolidated health allowances for July and August. He however promised that the monies will be disbursed along with the October salaries.
The comments come following a protested by Kisoro nurses who stormed the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and the District Health officer (DHO) demanding for their lunch allowances.
According to Onzu, there are two categories of nurses, upper scale who receive 330,000 monthly and lower scale who get 220,000 Ugandan shillings respectively.
He further advised that all nurses must focus on how much earn each is supposed to get but keep in mind the 30% Pay as you Earn tax.
“The nurses raised an issue claiming the 30% taxation on their lunch allowance is unfair however, it is a matter they need to take up with their Members of Parliament to change the law”, Onzu explained
Head of Nurses in Kisoro Ronald Dushakimana said the development is well received because he was coming under a lot of pressure from nurses who were threatening to lay down their tools.
“I believe it is a mission well accomplished because nurses will access their consolidated lunch allowances by the end of the month which is a great boast to the health care providers”, Dushakimana explained
