Kabeni Elias, the 31-years-old man from Nyarusiza Sub County who murdered his 5-year-old son Tuesday evening handed himself to Kisoro Central Police Station after the act.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that Kabeni, a peasant and resident of Matyazo village, Rukongi parish, Nyarusiza Sub County in Kisoro district committed the crime at 8:30pm this Tuesday.
A statement released by Maate indicates that the deceased boy is Junior Aloysius, aged 5 years, who has been staying with his grandmother in the same area.
It is alleged that on Tuesday evening, Kabeni, the father of the deceased went to his mother’s place, a one Nyirashoruburyo Jovia, aged 65 years of the same address, who is also a grandmother to the deceased.
Police adds that the suspect had gone to pick they key to his house which he usually keeps at his mother’s place, but later deceided to leave with his son who is now the deceased.
However, along the way while heading to his home, which is just a few meters away, Kabeni killed him by cutting his throat, ran away and handed himself over to Kisoro Police Station, moments later.
According to Maate, a case file was opened at Kisoro Central Police Station, and the scene of crime was visited by OC station Kisoro, SP Asiimwe Pious and team.
The deceased’s body was conveyed to Kisoro hospital mortuary pending postmortem and the suspect remains in police custody.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kabeni had an argument with the wife over the biological father of the child and he was informed by the wife that the child is not his, thus deciding to kill the child.
The Matyazo village LC1 Chairperson, Geoffrey Boshuwenda told Voice of Muhabura in an interview that the suspect, who separated with his wife last year, has been a habitual drunkard.
On separation, the wife, who hails from Muramba Sub County took with her the younger child, while Kabeni remained with their first born, who is now the deceased.
Mr Boshuwenda urged families to seek redress from relevant authorities, instead of taking such decisions.
