An early Kick off between UPDF and Kisoro Municipal Vocational Training Institute at Mashaka Playground will mark the beginning of the John Kale Memorial football tournament in Kisoro District.
A total of fourteen teams for the men and six for the women will participate in the tournament with the hopes of having the best of the best reach the finals, scheduled to be played on October 7th, 2023, at Saaza playground.
The tournament is aimed at developing sports talent among the youth of Kisoro district.
The tournament also seeks to honor the late John Kalekezi, a true Pan- African leader who died in a plane crash on August 17th, 1960, in the then Soviet Union.
He was based in Cairo at the time of his death where he was the foreign secretary of the Uganda National Congress (UNC) and permanent secretary of the Afro-Asian solidarity committee.
The Late John Kale’s light was not completely wiped out as his son, former Inspector General of Police and retired army officer Kale Kayihura is also celebrated as a true national figure who has spurred development by professionalizing the Uganda Police Force.
The Kisoro district acting Sports officer, Tumwizere Edson says the tournament has helped put a spotlight on the weakness by Government to prioritize talent development, especially in Kigezi region.
He noted that Kisoro district needs to have more people who love and support sports activities if the sector must take a step further in developing the community.
Tumwizere decried little government support for sports, especially in the education sector which hinders early talent identification and multiplication.
