The Sewage plant managed by National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Kisoro Municipality has in recent months been experiencing flooding which has resulted in the overflow of sludge that is affecting the productivity of people’s gardens.
The residents in the area say they are tired of the putrid smell from the plant especially during the night.
The call to re-locate the sewage plant dates back to 2009 when the residents first raised their concern however little has been done to shut down the plant located in a community of homes.
The sewage plant operates in lagoons that have since malfunctioned. To make it worse, the overflow of water can no longer drain into the ground because the land has become saturated.
Engineer Robert Mukasa who represented the manager of NWSC Kisoro said a lot of effort has been put into treating the bad smell and the public can attest to the progress.
Eng. Mukasa said the biggest problem is caused storm water draining into the sewer lines from buildings in Kisoro town from Mutanda, Chuho road which is overwhelms the system.
He further said the office in Kisoro has written to National Water and Sewerage Headquarters in Kampala requesting for a re-location of the sewage plant because it is not supposed to be a town but near a swamp which can act as a catchment area for water.
Challenges at the Plant
Eng. Mukasa said the plant is exposed to trespass because all the link chain fences were stolen by unknown people.
He explained that plans to hire armed security guards for day and night as well as adding security lights are underway.
George Kitentera, 62 said he has lived near the sewage plant for more than four decades and the issue of the smell has been a big problem to his family.
He called upon the leaders to expedite the re- location of the sewage plant.
Kisoro Mayor Richard Ndyana said he was in the process of engaging the Ministry of Water and Environment however he noted that National Water and Sewerage Corporation headquarters needs to be given an opportunity to carry out their planned re- location of the sewage plant.
