Chibumba Primary School in Chahafi Town Council, Kisoro district remains submerged, now for three days, following strong rains that pounded the area on Sunday.
This is the second flooding at the government-aided school in a space of one year.
Chibumba Primary School and many villages in Chahafi Town Council were last year affected by floods and mudslides following the heavy rain that hit the area on 2nd and 4th May 2023.
The rains coincidently caused mudslides that left 8 people dead in Chahafi Town Council, Murora and Kanaba Sub Counties.
The school was also submerged by the waters, which necessitated support relief agencies such as the Uganda Red Cross Society and United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) by establishing makeshift learning spaces.
The Sunday afternoon rains, that pounded the areas for about 2 hours, left many places in Chibumba including the school flooded.
This has left the school looking for options by conducting lessons from Chibumba Church of Uganda in Chahafi Town Council.
According to the Deputy Head teacher, Chibumba Primary School, Mr Francis Nizeyimana, the area remains flooded and some learners have found reasons to abscond from classes.
He says the school management is worried that structures risk collapsing on pupils, urging the government to renovate the classrooms for the safety of pupils.
“The school flooded on Sunday and as you can see, the situation is bad. I think the government should intervene and help us,” He said.
Mr Nizeyimana is also worried of the danger that comes with the flooding of latrines, which risks the spread of diseases like Cholera, Dysentery and a general sanitation problem.
Speaking to our reporter, residents living near Chibumba Primary School are worried of waterborne diseases due to the stagnant water, while gardens with food crops remain submerged.
Efforts to speak to the Kisoro District Disaster Committee remain futile.
A recent notice issued by the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) indicated that Southwestern region should brace for heavy rains between the months of March and May.
The March, April and May (MAM) forecast predicted heavy rains coupled with thunderstorms and lightnings in most parts of the country.
