Bavuga takes VP seat at UNAA elections, Vows to heal Divisionism among Ugandans living aboard
By Alex Gahima
Joan Bavuga, a mother of two and resident of Michigan State for the last 12 years has won the Vice President Position for Uganda North American Association (UNAA) for the period of 2021-2023.
Bavuga, who was born and raised in Kisoro district says it has always been a dream of hers, to serve all Ugandans living aboard.
UNAA is the largest non-political formal association of Ugandans in the Diaspora.
The organization aims to promote the social, cultural and economic development of the Ugandan Community in North America and beyond. The Ugandan Community in North America numbers over 120,000 individuals.
The current President and CEO of UNAA is Henrietta Nairuba Wamala.
Bavuga says she formerly served as the vice President of Ugandans in Michigan. She noted that her desire to become Vice President stems from seeing divisionism among Ugandans living in North America.
“I found it heart breaking that we as Ugandans living aboard still have the audience to ask you which part of Uganda you come from in order to work with you and yet we all need to be united to develop ourselves,” Bavuga explained
Bavuga notes that she always thought UNAA conventions were simply about the labor holiday celebrations but it she realized that UNAA presents a great opportunity for Ugandans to develop and work together in America.
