42 day Lock down-Families in Kisoro Struggle as GBV cases increase to 50 in less than three weeks
By KAMUSIME BANABASI
The district senior probation officer Okwaratuhe Alex has said more than 50 Gender based violence cases have been registered in Kisoro district within the last 22 days of lock down.
While speaking to the voice of Muhabura, Okwaratuhe said that he has registered in his office over 40 cases of domestic violence and 10 cases of teenage pregnancies.
Okwaratuhe says that the most cause of the domestic violence revolve around disagreements over land especially when husbands who have other families out of Kisoro district try to sell land and cater for the other families leading to opposition from wives and children in Kisoro.
He revealed that over 10 cases of teenage pregnancies have been reported to his office but there are other cases in communities that have not yet been reported.
He decried the increasing tradition from some leaders and parents who connive to cash in on young girls who get unwanted pregnancies.
Mr. Okwaratuha says that he is worried that gender based violence cases will shoot by the time the 42 days lock down ends.
He also prayed that the lock down does not get extended because these cases may overtake the ones that were registered in the first lock down.
Meanwhile, he said that cases related to child care failure have greatly increased with over 50% men failing to meet their dues meant to upkeep their abandoned children under guardianship of relatives or divorced mothers.
He said that he has 105 cases of abandoned children registered so far.
